Join us on Thursday 23rd January between 6.00 and 8.00pm for our very first ‘Meet The Artist’ session. Nigel Rose will be in the gallery to discuss his latest work and answer any questions that you might have.
From Adman to Artist, Ladak London’s current exhibition, which opened in late November, focuses mostly on Rose’s 2019 oil paintings, many of which are inspired by the oeuvre of Euan Uglow (1932-2000), an artist best known for his depictions of the human figure as well as still life and landscape paintings.
Uglow’s style is largely defined by a precision-based approach to his subjects, meticulously measured through marks on the canvas which usually remained visible in the finished work. The resulting paintings have a strong sense of colour and a sculptural feel that reflects the artist’s attention to accurate dimension and scale and a profound sensitivity to the space around and within the subject matter. Rose has embraced a similar approach in a number of canvases which are labelled ‘After Uglow’.
A browser full of reasonably priced drawings offers another view of Rose’s work, as do large scale charcoal portraits within the show. There is also a trio of playful charcoal on paper nudes sporting iconic head adornments: Mini Girl after the famous mouse, Brave Girl, who wears an Indian headdress with a trophy plaster that gives the pictures its name and Bear Girl. It is in all these drawings that Rose’s exquisite draftsmanship is most evident.
